Christmas Party
After a year’s break, we are pleased to be able to say we can all enjoy a pre-Christmas get together. This year things will be a little different. Following on from the success of the picnic in the park over pride weekend this year’s Northern Wave Christmas party will be held at ‘Coffee Cranks’ the old cricket pavilion in Alexander Park on Saturday, 4th December from 6pm - 9pm.
Instead of the traditional Christmas meal this year it will be a Pot Luck supper and we are asking everyone to contribute a dish either starter, main or dessert. So for the chefs and bakers among us time to get creating or if cooking’s not your thing browse the Christmas food selection at your local supermarket. There will be a bar serving alcohol plus tea and coffee and a glass of fizz on arrival.
The party will be free for Northern Wave members and £5 for guests (partners, friends or anyone else you want to bring along).
Please use this form to let us know if you're coming, who you're bringing with you and what culinary delights you're planning to bring.
Awards
Nominations are now open for the combined 2020 & 2021 annual awards. As with previous years, there will be a presentation of some serious and not so serious awards to club members at the Christmas Party. Please get your thinking caps on and nominate someone for an award or achievement that merits a mention. It can be anything! Previously a couple (Jess & Sue) received the cross-dressing award – having swum a session wearing each other’s costumes.
On a more serious note, our much-loved fellow swimmer and swimming teacher Gill Wright died earlier this year from a brain tumour. She was only 62. In honour of Gill, the club has instigated an annual award in her name. The Gill Wright award will, for the first time, be presented at this years Christmas Party. We are seeking your nominations for this award, which should go to someone from the club who you think has made a significant contribution towards NWSC or who has significantly improved their swimming or overcome challenges in the year.
Nominations and ideas for awards should be sent to membership@northernwave.org
Swimming Times
Manchester Aquatics Centre
Following the announcement that the Aquatics Centre (MAC) will undergo a substantial refurbishment over the next 18 months our session there has had to be moved in order to accommodate the demands on the very limited pool time. NWSC has been offered and accepted the new time of Saturday afternoon from 3-4pm. This is not ideal but means we will have access to 50m swimming during the refurbishment.
- From 11 December 3-4pm MAC Training pool (50m)
Moss Side
We keep asking Moss Side for a return to our traditional Tuesday time of 8-9pm but to date have had no success – we will carry on asking but in the meantime, the session remains at 8.30-9.30pm.
Sunday 7th November
We don't have a Sunday session at the MAC on 7th November due to an event. We have asked the University of Salford if we can swim there and are waiting to hear back from them. Once we know we'll let you know - keep an eye on the socials.
Club finances
Back in 2016, we revised the Club's door prices and introduced standing orders to ensure the financial viability of the Club. Up until the pandemic, this has been very successful and given the Club a very strong financial footing.
Now that we have been back swimming regularly for a while you may want to consider setting up a standing order to cover your door fees. Paying by standing order gives the Club a guaranteed income which helps to ensure the financial viability of all sessions. The Club's income has been impacted by the pandemic and continues to be affected. We are able to cover the deficit currently but it is not sustainable long term.
The cost of a monthly standing order is £15.00 Full Price and £7.50 if you earn less than the Living wage. Over a four week month, it gives you a saving of £3.00/£2.50. Standing Orders can be set up for multiple days if you regularly swim at more than one club session. You’ll no longer need to pay each week just book in and turn up ready to swim.
If you swim with the Club and don't already pay for your swim sessions by standing order, please would you consider doing so. If you'd like to, please email me (treasurer@northerwave.org) to let me know which sessions you'd like to pay for and I'll give you the details you'll need to set up a standing order.
Booking and paying for your swim sessions
Please don't forget that you need to book your Club swim sessions to guarantee that you'll be able to swim. The booking site address is:
https://northernwave.simplybook.it
If you don't pay for your swims by standing order you can pay by bank transfer or by card/contactless 'on the door' of each session.
