Manchester Pride
Thanks to all those who participated in the online poll about Northern Wave’s participation in upcoming Pride events. After a clear preference to participate in Manchester Pride over the August Bank holiday weekend, the club has secured a place in the parade through the city centre. It’s due to take place on the Saturday (27th August) - details about how it will actually work are still to be provided by the organisers. But in past years members who have taken part, have had to gather in the late morning and then set off an hour or so later on the march. We will let you all know when we have the details of how it’ll work this year.
We'll be aiming to wear club kit when we walk and we're about to place a group order for club kit (see below). If you want any new club kit let us know. Unfortunately, it's unlikely any new kit will arrive before the end of August but you never know.
Any member who wants to take part in the parade is welcome to - it’s a chance for us to join other parts of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and show our pride and demonstrate how inclusive our sport can be and our club is. Also, it’s a great day out for those who join in and great fun.
Neil Smallburn has kindly offered to organise our entry in the parade this year, so please let him or any committee member know if you want to take part and/or help organise it.
Pride picnic
Our second Pride picnic will take place on Sunday, 28th August in Alexandra Park.
Please bring your own food and drink along with anything that you might want to sit on, and any games that you might want to play. For those of you that have children, you are of course more than welcome to bring them along with you.
Now as well as being passionate swimmers we know there are a lot of avid bakers out there and some of you can be quite competitive, so this year we are adding a baking competition into the mix. I’m sure any test bakes can be happily sampled in the pub during the coming weeks!
We’ll meet outside ‘Coffee Cranks’ near the entrance from Demesne Road at 1.30pm, from there we’ll find a suitable place for us to sit and play.
July/August closure of the MAC
The MAC will be completely closed during the last week of July and the whole of August. This means there will be no Northern Wave sessions from 30th July to 27th August inclusive.
We've not been able to find an alternative venue for the Saturdays but we will be running the Friday evening sessions at Moss Side during the MAC closure. As before the sessions will start at 9pm.
If you pay for your Saturday sessions by standing order:
- You can use your Saturday SO for the Friday sessions.
- If you don't want to attend the Friday sessions, you can amend or cancel your standing order for August or ask Donald (treasurer@northernwave.org) for a 'Saturday' refund.
Club Kit
Do you fancy some fresh new swimwear or a nice hoodie to keep you warm after a swim? Are you heading off to a competition and want to represent Northern Wave in full glory? Have you been eyeing up Edwin’s shirt at training and been dying to get your hands on one? Well, you’re in luck because we’ll shortly be placing a group kit order with our supplier and that means that you can make the most of postage and packaging savings.
Sizing
SHOALO manufactures our kit and if you haven’t had any of their products before you should note that their sizing is a little different. The official size chart can be found here and the general advice is that you should order a size larger than you might normally wear.
The standard range of swimwear covers sizes 18-40 but some products can be made larger on request, so do let us know if you want us to enquire on your behalf.
The poolside T-Shirts also run a little small, so it’s recommended that you order 1 or even 2 sizes larger than you might normally wear. The example provided is that if you normally wear a medium you might like a large for an athletic fit or an extra-large for a relaxed fit.
The hoodies and polo shirts generally run true to size so you should be fine ordering your normal size.
Returns
Everything is made to order so kit cannot be returned or refunded unless it’s faulty.
Ordering
Our kit is available year-round direct from our supplier, but unfortunately, small ad-hoc orders are subject to an admin fee of £25 and regular postage and packaging costs. To reduce these charges we’ll be placing a group order at the end of July. This will waive the admin fee and we should also qualify for free shipping.
Production time is 4 – 8 weeks from ordering so hopefully we should have our kit around the end of September.
If you would like to place an order please email secretary@northernwave.org with details of the products that you want including the size and in the case of hoodies, the colour.
Please then transfer the amount that you owe to the Northern Wave bank account.
The last date for orders will be Friday 22nd July 2022.

Booking and paying for your swim sessions
Please don't forget that you need to book your Club swim sessions to guarantee that you'll be able to swim. The booking web address is:

Please remember, if you have booked a swim and for any reason, you aren’t able to attend, you must cancel your booking using the link in the booking confirmation email. If you don't have the email then please text/WhatsApp or email Donald (membership@northernwave.org). Doing this ensures that swim sessions are open to as many as possible.
If you don't pay for your swims by standing order you can pay by bank transfer or by card/contactless 'on the door' of each session.
